This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend a Title I School and come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. Each of my students has a need that substantially impacts their education, but these kids refuse to let this limit their potential! My students are spread throughout grades K-2 but I am blessed to have them with me each entire day. These students need to know that people care about them and their success.
My students need an advocate inside their classroom that will do whatever it takes to ensure that they are provided with essential tools to help them access and succeed in their educational environment.
The majority of the students in my classroom have intensive sensory needs. These sensory needs include but are not limited to: noises, smells, emotional outburst, overstimulation, etc. To meet the needs of these unique individuals, I need to be able to provide them with materials that will enable them to succeed in this learning environment. To keep learning fun, I strive to provide a multi-sensory based classroom. Each of my students are on different cognitive levels which means that I differentiate instruction daily in the classroom.
My Project
With the teddy bear counters, poms, pattern block shapes, mini tongs, buttons, letters, etc. I will be able to create task boxes tailored to meet a variety of instructional levels. This will allow for less "down" time while providing FUN hands-on learning opportunities. The MagnaTiles will allow students to think outside the box and create to their hearts content. The MagnaTiles will foster imagination, critical thinking, and creativity while teaching students about the laws of magnetics.
The materials chosen will meet the fundamental needs of the students entrusted in my care while allowing for differentiation.
Each task box will address a level or need for my students. As the students progress, the task boxes will gradually become more challenging. The task boxes will allow for differentiation in both fundamental literacy and mathematical skills. Students will be able to independently challenge themselves and have a sense of autonomy over this part of their instruction. Task boxes will include patterns, letter identification, one to one correspondence, word building, etc.
