Hands on Learning for Little Learners

My Project

First grade is a year filled with learning essential reading and writing foundational skills. Students in first grade grow their knowledge of letter names and sounds into more complex phonics patterns like digraphs (th, sh, wh, etc) and vowel teams (ee, ea, ai, ay, etc).

When students are able to manipulate materials, such as these magnetic letters, during instruction, their participation and retention of information grows!

I plan to use these materials during our whole group phonics instruction and in smaller groups during our intervention block. A portion of our phonics curriculum utilizes magnetic letters for students to practice adding, deleting, and substituting sounds to make new words. These are very important skills when learning how to read and write.

The letters and boards will be put into "sets" so each student has what they need for our phonics instruction. Right now, I am not able to teach this manipulative portion of the curriculum, as I do not have the materials. My goal is that student participation and learning is enhanced by the addition of these magnetic whiteboards and magnetic letters.
