Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a kindergarten dual language teacher at the Virtual Learning Academy in Providence, RI. It is an urban, public school with approximately 3000 students. More than 90% of our students qualify for free lunch and about one third are English language learners. Many of our students don't have books or other learning supplies at home.
One of my goals this year is to build a culture of reading, where our student build a love of learning and reading.
The students are loving our live lessons and these materials will allow them to interact more during the lessons. In addition, we will be able to use many of these materials for a formative assessment tool.
In addition, I would like to be able to do some "play- based learning" with my Kindergarteners. The research is clear that early childhood should include opportunities for students to have purposeful play, as well as hands- on learning. In order, to create more opportunities for screen free learning my students need materials to use at home.
My Project
This year I am teaching a kindergarten dual language virtual class. The goals of this program is for students to become bilingual and biliterate. This project will allow my students to do creative hands- on and play based learning safely from their homes. Kindergarten is an important developmental grade where students learn so much from hands-on learning.
This project will also include a manipulatives to utilize during math, reading, writing and science.
This project includes marker boards for math, expo markers, wipe off sleeves, crayons and play dough. I will be able to have students interact by writing on the white boards and sleeves and having them hold them during our live zoom sessions. They can learn to form letters and numbers using the play dough.
