A sad fact about school is that hands-on learners are often neglected by core subjects (English, math, science, and social studies). A few years ago I found one engaging answer for this problem that allowed them to shine and pushed my other students into new realms of learning.
My students love to learn, even if they don't always realize it.
Most are visual, hands-on learners who excel when they are allowed to manipulate the material regardless of the subject matter. Unfortunately by the time they reach high school the spark of learning has been snuffed out by boring lessons that do not take into consideration their specific learning styles. However, if allowed to learn in the way that best suits them, the passion for learning that most had as kids comes rushing back.
My Project
Putting Model Magic in my students' hands will give them a chance to do hands-on activities with their vocabulary words and literary terms. In the past I have had them create elaborate sculptures outside of class for their vocabulary words and then teach the class the word's meaning with their own visual aid. It is always a hit with the kids and a true learning experience that creates a connection with a specific concept that they will not soon forget. While this activity has been a great success there has been a certain number of students that did not complete it because they did not have materials at home or the means to buy materials to complete the project. This past year I was able to give each student two packs of Model Magic. As a result, more students were engaged and more students learned the terms. I am requesting five more class packs of Model Magic in order to continue the success. This year students will use Monkey-Foam, Play-Doh, and thinking putty in class to do similar activities.
My students need to use their hands to learn.
They need to feel, touch, and manipulate material. Unfortunately, it is not always easy to accommodate this in English class. Sculpting with Model Magic, Monkey-Foam, Play-Doh, and thinking putty has been one of the best ways of bringing this kind of learning to my classroom. With your help I can continue to bring these opportunities to my students.
