Hands-on History: The Oregon Trail Brought to Life

Help me give my students a living history experience of pioneers and the Westward Expansion.

My Students

We have an amazing group of 4th grade students. Many of our students are kinesthetic learners who thrive with hands-on activities and explorations. To allow kinesthetic learners to grow, our school encourages flexible seating and self-directed learning opportunities.

Community connections and collaboration are the foundations of our school and students' learning.

Our students are encouraged to collaborate and work in teams to develop this life long skill. They are kind and generous. They are actively involved in giving back to their community through food drives, collections for the animal shelters, making hats for babies, and completing service hours. We are proud to say that they already have an awareness of the impact they have on others lives.

My Project

This all day living museum presentation brings the field trip to the school and allows them the hands-on

opportunity to experience pioneer life during the Westward Expansion, about 1840-1890.

The students will cover topics ranging from Native Americans of Idaho, Lewis & Clark, the Oregon Trail, and general pioneer living.

This program will leave a lasting impression and give students a greater understanding and appreciation for pioneers during the Westward Expansion. Activities include setting up camp with a fully restored and equipped chuck wagon, fetching water and using a hand pump to get it, washing clothes and dishes, sawing wood with both a crosscut and bow saw, making shingles, learning to make a campfire, roping, and branding, making butter, preparing a meal and cooking it over an open fire, making a wooden button, creating toys, and playing pioneer games.
