Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember entering your high school geometry class and being terrified that you weren't going to understand the world of math? How about learning how to visualize shapes with area and perimeter and not being able to truly SEE and UNDERSTAND what it all meant? Having manipulatives can help!
My students attend a public high school in an urban city in California.
Most of them come to high school significantly below grade level in math and our goal is to prepare each and every one of them for college. However math can be a huge gate-keeper for students who want to both graduate from high school and from college. My class is filled with eager and motivated high school students who have been underserved in their schools and deprived of a quality math education for many years. They are trying to catch up on many years of missed basic math skills while keeping up with their current geometry class.
My Project
Geometry is an extremely conceptual course that provides students with opportunities to learn about the physical world. Geometry increases critical thinking - a skill necessary to be successful in college, and teaches students to synthesize concepts and math skills that they have been learning for many years. However, many of the concepts in geometry are extremely hard to understand from simply pictures on paper. When looking at triangles, circles and the transformations of any shapes, there is nothing greater than getting the opportunity to create and change these shapes on ones own. My students will be able to physically see the geometry concepts with the geo-boards while increasing the rigor of their problem solving skills with the geo-board cards. In addition these geo-boards will provide opportunities for differentiation by offering an additional method of learning for those who may need more than traditional teaching styles.
The satisfaction my students will get by finally feeling successful in a math class is something that they will keep with them forever.
A chance to finally feel comfortable with and understand math in a new way may change my students' view on math and will provide the motivation needed to keep accelerating in high school and college level math courses.
