This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are outstanding young people with a strong and still growing sense of social responsibility and justice. They come from extremely diverse backgrounds with over 80% of our students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Our school is an open-enrollment STEM focused high school. As a community of students and faculty, we believe that any student who wants to push themselves in a rigorous classroom should have the opportunity. My students come to school eager to learn every day and are dedicated to their studies. As a result, our school has one of the highest attendance rates in the city.
Everyday in biology class we explore the way the living world works and where we, as humans, fit into it.
My students are learning to be responsible citizens of the earth by learning how interconnected all life is.
My Project
Last spring, my students' faces lit up when they realized our classroom fish were breeding. Immediately a thousand questions erupted from the room. Our lesson was put on the back burner while the students scraped the eggs off the glass and prepared a small holding tank for the eggs. Students began talking excitedly about what the offspring would look like. A light bulb went off for me. I realized they actually were interested in genetics, which they had struggled through only a month before.
My students need an authentic and hands on way to learn abstract genetic principles--my students need an axolotl breeding program.
An axolotl is a type of aquatic salamander that is used as a model organism because it breeds easily in the lab. We need fish tanks, filters and test kits to take care of adult and juvenile axolotls so we can investigate the inheritance of different axolotl traits. We'll also use axolotls to study ecology, biogeochemical cycles and physiology.
