Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are typical for the Los Angeles area suburbs. Most are immigrants from Mexico/Central/South America or Armenia. Many did not have good formal education before entering school in the U.S.A. As a result, most are many grade levels behind in math. A majority are on free/reduced lunch programs, and more than 20% are classified as English learners (Many more have been re-classified) and more than 5% are Special Needs. Capturing and keeping attention with all the available distractions is a great challenge. After 1.3+ years of distance learning, there are many, many gaps in their math knowledge and number sense needs a big boost.
My Project
Fraction circles have proven to be the best way to give my students a good sense of how big a fraction is, why we need to have the same size pieces (denominator) to add fractions, and how changing from a mixed number to an improper fraction really works.
A gut sense of how big or small a fraction is can have a lasting impact on math education.
Most of my students are afraid of fractions. The lessons I have that are designed around fraction circles rely on that real, hands on sense of what a 'whole' is. Fraction circles accomplishes that better than fraction tiles, or rods can. We are seeking flash cards and manipulatives.
Since changing schools, I no longer have access to a set of fraction circles, and can see the difference these tools make. Please help my students know that 11/12 is more than 4/5 by providing this fantastic tool.
