My Project

My classroom is set in an outlying Native Alaskan school on Prince of Wales Island in Alaska. Research has shown that my students thrive on place based education and hands-on learning, so I try to incorporate the natural environment as much as possible in our lessons.

Our little school of 70 students is located within walking distance of ocean, estuary, river, forest and bog environments.

This year, we will be studying the principles of chemistry. Students will explore concepts such as pH, crystallization, and reaction types. These materials will help my students explore their local environment by helping them test water samples for pH, nitrate, and phosphate. They will also learn about mineralization by growing crystals from various salts. We will also evaporate seawater to see what type of crystals appear.
