My 6th grade students are curious, intelligent, and enthusiastic learners who love being scientists when testing their ideas and exploring scientific phenomenon. I feel so lucky to be their science teacher!
COVID-19 has especially impacted this group of social learners who learn best with hands-on approaches.
These students need tools in their hands to build their learning and understanding of science content.
I feel the weight of making science fun for students to continue feeling motivated by engaging and supportive student learning. I know future researchers, engineers, and teachers are in this 6th grade class!
My Project
The requested items will support academic learning and provide hands-on opportunities for students to learn about the abstract concepts of atoms, molecules, and matter. This group of students needs to manipulate and touch to maximize their learning. COVID-19 has challenged their ability to persevere in learning hard concepts, and their interest in using technology to explore science concepts is dwindling.
This project will help my 75 6th grade students explore science with enthusiasm, with their preferred learning approaches.
Texts that will contribute to the class science library to support student reading of instructional texts (non-fiction) have also been requested. So much of student reading is by computers, and this group will benefit by having a book in their hand when learning about the 6th grade standards relating to atoms, matter, and food webs.
