This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach Transitions to Algebra, a 9th grade class, at a critical needs school district in Mississippi.
When students are first introduced to algebraic equations, it is often difficult for them to understand the justification for, and consequently remember, the rules governing their manipulation. I equate the difficulties they face with that of a chess player attempting to play a game without the use of the physical board. However, the difficulties increase exponentially when you imagine teaching a child to play chess without the use of the physical board and pieces.
Algebra Tiles are a brilliant tool that students can use to turn abstract and seemingly arbitrary processes into a concrete, even intuitive, game. The ability to hold a "zero pair", a pair of tiles with the opposite value that cancel one another out, has a incalculable tactile satisfaction.
By donating to this cause, you will strengthen the mathematical foundations of my students as they enter Algebra I, a class too often forced to remediate students who were not provided the proper preparation for a state tested subject.
