My Students

One of the most important things our children can learn in school is to embrace, rather than fear, differences. Celebrating the diversity of America is a really critical lesson. This rug helps set the tone -- and does it in a joyful way!

In our school, we group children in heterogeneous groups.

In other words, we group children of different abilities and interests. Different backgrounds, different academic strengths and different passions. All schooling and especially elementary schooling has both an academic and a social curriculum. It's important to pay attention to both if we are going to grow responsible citizens.

My Project

So how do we address the social learning that needs to take place in school? One important way is by talking together and engaging in group activities. Sharing our differences in family life, thoughts about a read aloud, or ways of solving a math problem. A great deal of this sharing is done together as a group -on the rug! So having a rug that celebrates diversity as well as working together (holding hands) is important.

We spend a lot of time talking and sharing activities together and much of this time is spent on the rug!

So having a classroom rug that sets the tone in a joyful way can play an important role!
