My Students

"Dr. Seuss may have had a questionable past, but this does not discount the good and joy he brought to the world in later years. A man should be measured by the sum of his actions not by a negative few, which he grew to regret." This is a quote from an argumentative essay from one of my former 10th grade students who will soon be in my AP language class. My Advanced Placement English language students are a group of bright, energetic, inquisitive young people, with a thirst for knowledge and a passion for argument.

My Project

With the logic that reading good writers breeds good writers, my students read from the ever-growing canon of traditional literature and newly minted classics. The 36 copies of Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale" will allow my students to read and annotate the text to fully flush out their thinking. Although we do have novels at our school, few have the deep and richness of text required for college level analysis. With this set, the students will be able to talk to the text and use meta-cognition to understand the why's and how's of Atwood's style.

Unlike other students enrolled in AP classes around the country, most of my students are not able to afford their own copies of all of the required course materials.

It is common to assign student to purchase their own copies of in class texts in AP, but this is not a reality for the students in my class. At a school in a low-income neighborhood, we often do the best with what we have. However, our students need access to collegiate level texts on a regular basis to gain the exposure which is afforded to so many others taking this same course. Lack of experience with such text, places them at a staggering disadvantage when it comes to competing academically on a national scale.
