Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Bernice Johnson Reagan said that “Life's challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, they're supposed to help you discover who you are.” I believe this true of my students each day that they come to school.
My classroom is made up of students from low income families that only have opportunities to access technology at school.
My students often move around to different schools, making it hard for most to move forward in reading. I started the year with 24 students and now only have 13 of those kids who I started the year with. Each week I have new students that have to learn our routines on top of trying to continue learning. These students usually struggle with reading because they have not been in a school long enough to develop strategies to tackle a text.
My Project
Currently, the second grade classroom uses iPod Touches to build fluency, listen to stories, and work on comprehension activities. Often my fifth grade classroom borrows from the second graders to give them the same opportunities, but we are realizing that our classroom needs to have two of our own iPods to practice with throughout the day.
In the classroom, students are engaged and focused on their learning when they sit with an iPod in hand listening to their own reading. Using the iPods and microphones, students can hear themselves read, which makes students realize when they don’t understand a word or when they are confused. Students will make corrections in their reading, helping them to become better readers. My new students have an immediate way to continue with their learning in reading that is a little less threatening then reading out loud with a new teacher or friend. They jump right in, and I can figure out how to best help them immediately.
Your help will allow for more students to have opportunities to access reading and grow as readers in my fifth grade classroom.
The iPod Touches would be like having extra teachers in the classroom for my students.
