I teach in a multicultural title 1 school in south Seattle. My students are predominantly African, African American, Asian, and Filipino. Throughout the year, we learn music through singing, dancing, listening, playing instruments, and performing, using primarily Orff-Schulwerk and Feierabend curricula.
The music curriculum heavily incorporates percussion of all types, and I look forward to doing more advanced percussion projects and activities as the year progresses.
In the future, I hope to get more professional training in World Music Drumming.
Throughout the years, the hand drums in my classroom have been slowly falling apart. As of right now, we only have 7 usable drums, and my average class size is between 22 and 25. Many of my students gravitate towards drums over pitched instruments and voice, so having just a few new drums in the classroom will increase student engagement and improve beat competency. These drums could also be used for accompaniment with the Choirbirds. In short, a new set of hand drums will serve our school both in the general music classroom and on the stage as rising stars!
