Teaching a child about music without letting them experience it themselves is like teaching them how to write without ever letting them talk. Children need to experience by doing and creating and discovering and only then organizing what they've experienced into formal learning.
All 800 of our students get music class once a week.
They are always very excited for any hands-on activity or opportunity to move, create, and collaborate. We are a Title 1 school with 90%+ poverty rate and high diversity, with many ENL learners from varied backgrounds. Teachers and administrators strive to create an orderly environment with easy-to-follow, clear procedures and expectations. Our students are creative, energetic, and excited to learn!
With a full class set of hand drums, each student will be able to possess an instrument for use in rhythm activities. They are always excited to work on rhythms with body percussion (clap, pat, stomp, and snap) but with hand drums they will be able to expand their learning opportunities. They work not only on recognizing rhythms aurally but also reading rhythms visually, creating and comparing, and writing rhythmic patterns.
Having a drum for each student will create greater student buy-in in the learning process.
Instruments are an effective method for helping the students keep excited about working in class. Giving the students experiences with handheld percussion will help transition the older students' rhythmic knowledge to any instruments they play when they get to middle school.
