Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students make up a beautiful cultural bouquet! We are approximately 75% Hispanic, 20% Black/Haitian, and 5% White/Other.
We are FAMILY in spite of and because of our differences!
As a teacher in a Title 1 school in a migrant community, I see the daily struggles of so many of my students. Many are responsible for looking after their younger siblings while their parents are working in the fields. Many of my students also work at businesses in the community to help out their family financially. Sadly, some are even homeless.
For 49 minutes a day, I am so blessed to watch them show up anyway. I get to see them work hard and successfully complete Algebra 2 and Pre-Calculus...no small feat!
I am so proud of them all!
My Project
Math is an intimidating subject for most students, and when math is presented in words instead of numbers, many students are ready to quit. In an effort to teach students how to visualize and breakdown higher level math problems, I am hoping to purchase 8 colored graphing calculators that 8 students will be able to use throughout the year and take with them to college. This way, those students will have access to a technology that can help them form real-world connections.
The way the Hammy Lottery works is this: students receive tickets for completing homework assignments and scoring well on exams.
Every quarter, tickets are turned in and a name is drawn as the winner of the graphing calculator.
