Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Situated in a rust-belt neighborhood surrounded by the crumbling remains of the steel industry, we are a "highest poverty" school where high expectations equal results. Despite our best efforts, our families often struggle to find the means to support their school-age children-- from clothing to supplies, from shampoo to shoelaces, from when they wake up to when they go to sleep, our families must work hard to get what their children need. Parents work multiple jobs, sacrificing sleep and supervisory time with their children to meet basic needs.
As the coordinator of our school's high ability program and a technology teacher, I have the good fortune to work with exceptionally talented students who, despite their often humble origins, have the capacity to become leaders in their communities and beyond.
Every child deserves to be challenged. We want our children to have what they need every day; but, the need is great and time is short. If we fail to provide outlets for creativity, intellect, determination, and drive, other influences are sure to target these gifted children. That is why we work so hard to find them as many opportunities as possible to make the most of their unique potential.
My Project
Our school's amateur radio club has taken on the challenge of getting students licensed as amateur radio operators. It will be the hardest test some of them have ever taken, but it will, literally, open a world of possibilities for them:
Amateur radio licensing will help students learn about STEM by contacting the International Space Station, launching weather balloons, learning to program computers, and talking to people across the world!
We have precious few resources at our school but students have a deep love of STEM topics. Amateur radio is a great outlet for their hidden potential. These licensing books will help our students become the makers of the future.
