I teach English in the alternative school for 7-12 grade students in our county. Students come to us because they are unsuccessful in the traditional classroom, either because of academics, behavior, attendance, or some combination. I have taught here for eleven years, and find that the rewards of working with this population are tremendous. The students are eager to learn; they have just been turned off by traditional methods of teaching.

Many of our students have never seen a live theatrical performance. This year, the local professional theatre is doing a production of Hamlet. I would love for my students to be able to study the play, and then attend an actual production. However, since Hamlet is not in our regular curriculum, I do not have any classroom copies of the play.

With a classroom set of easy-to-understand Hamlets, and an audio CD, my students will be able to understand and appreciate the play before they see it. Since I am a former drama teacher, my students usually enjoy our Shakespeare unit, but they have never been able to see a live production before. Imagine the sense of accomplishment they will feel when they can see and comprehend a performance which many of their peers do not understand.

Please, make this dream a reality for my students. Many people think that students at the alternative school are too "dumb" to appreciate Shakespeare. I know from experience that this is not true; they just need the opportunity to understand the most important English works of all time.
