Gutenberg 2.1: Ink and Paper for Kids Without Textbooks

My students need paper and ink because our school district does not have enough money to buy textbooks. We are having to create our own learning materials and need help.

My Students

Our school district can't afford to buy basic classroom supplies, including ink and paper, or to give teachers funding for supplies. Since it also can't afford to buy enough textbooks, that puts us in a real bind.

Our students are almost entirely African-American and live in one of the most socioeconomically depressed areas of the country.

We've been hit especially hard by the worldwide financial crisis: the 16.8% unemployment rate for African-Americans is even higher here. Our school is in year four of "School Improvement" and has a terribly low literacy rates. Our kids are talented and brilliant, but we need to teach them to read and write before they can show all of their talents to the world.

My Project

We've been learning about Johannes Gutenberg in my World History classes and how his printing press changed the world by making ideas easier to produce, access, and afford. My printers are like his printing press: they give my students access to the ideas they need. Our school does not have enough textbooks for students to take home or in some cases, not enough for a complete class set. Our school is so strapped for cash, there is no other way for my kids to have material they can study at home or for classwork and homework. I am spending a large portion of my own salary trying to ensure that my kids have what they need. Please help us keep our classroom printing press going!

Our school system can't afford to buy textbooks or basic supplies, and my students' families can't afford to buy them, either.

Your help will ensure that my kids get the education they need and deserve.
