This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach and work with an amazingly resilient community of young scholars in deep east Oakland. While being in a small school community has many benefits, many of the community risk factors and stressors that plague Oakland ring true for our student population.

Despite the enormous challenges our students and community face on the day to day, our scholars show up because they enjoy being with their peers and have hopes for themselves, their families, community, and our world.

As a school community, our vision is for our young people to gain the skills and mindsets necessary to design a more equitable reality. We hope that by operating with joy, developing their mindsets and sense of justice, providing rich & rigorous academics and opportunities for career & skill exploration, that our scholars are able to thrive.

My Project

We have such musically talented students. While some students already bring their own guitars to school to play and practice during lunch, many others do not have the same access or opportunities to learn how to play an instrument. Help us start our guitar club.

The benefits of learning to play an instrument is undeniable.

Through learning an instrument students will reduce stress, increase their patience and perseverance, improve their memory, build confidence, teach time management, strengthen cognitive processing, make friends and so much more.

Help give my students electric acoustic guitars so that they can engage in joyful learning!
