Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

It's only rock and roll, but I like it and my fifth graders do too.

Engaging my students so they can learn is my top priority.

This is why I often use music to teach content. As a special education teacher in a low income community who is educating students who ostensibly have learning disabilities, I am constantly looking for ways to reach my students that have possibly been overlooked in the past. From the food chain, to climate change, to the Bill of Rights, my students learn quite a lot when I pass out lyric sheets, strap on my guitar, and all of us burst into song. After my students have heard me play the guitar, they invariably ask me to teach them how to play. I respond by telling them that if they would like to learn, then they will have to eat quickly at the beginning of their lunch period and then return to the classroom so that the remainder of the time can be used for their guitar lesson. They eagerly agree, but there is one problem: I only have two guitars, but twelve enthusiastic students who want to learn how to play.

My Project

Having ten more guitars will allow me to teach all of my students at the same time, which would mean that each student would have far more time to practice and reach his or her own level of success. There are many reasons why learning an instrument is a valid and meaningful use of time. Students who play an instrument develop self-discipline. When students schedule time each day to practice they are developing habits that transfer to other areas of study. They learn that doing something well requires hard work and determination. Playing the guitar also gives students an opportunity for self expression and creativity. Many begin to write their own songs or use music to add depth and meaning to school presentations and projects. Children feel incredible satisfaction when they have put great effort into practicing a song and then have the opportunity to perform it in front of their peers and parents.

Imagine the pride that children feel when they progress from not knowing how to play a single scale on the guitar to being able to play many types of scales and chords.

Additionally, the amount of learning and engagement that occurs when students are able to incorporate music into presentations is profound. With your help we can provide children with an instrument that not only provides endless amounts of fun, but also helps to develop skills and habits that will lead to their future success.
