This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Non-fiction books are not really my classes cup of tea, but Toby our class guinea pig is! My students are willing to work through the dullest informational book to find out more about our class pet.
My students live in a area where not many of them have access to either pets or books outside of school.
Most of my students have no idea how much work a pet truly is. I am trying to increase not only their knowledge about animals and their needs, but also about how to read and enjoy a non-fiction text.
My Project
I am requesting several non-fiction books dealing with the care and needs of guinea pigs. My students love learning about how to care for their new friend and this provides the perfect opportunity to share how wonderful a nonfiction text can be. I am also requesting several fiction books on guinea pigs so that my students will be able to compare and contrast the two types of literature.
Helping my students learn more about guinea pigs will not only help to make them better caretakers of our class animal, but will also provide them with the chance to practice important reading and researching skills.
