Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Though today's children have many chances to interact with technology, what they understand about technology from their point of view still needs to be explored. Today's children are the "Net Generation".

I currently work at a poverty school & my students have limited resources.

My students at times do not know where their next meal is coming from, and when they are sick, it is not always that they can to see a doctor. Most live in inadequate housing, food instability, and financial insecurity which places stresses on them and distract them from their studies. This causes them to disengage from school entirely. However, with the right tools I am sure I can provide the with the guidance they need to strive in life. I would like for my students to have the opportunity to learn through technology.

My Project

When students use technology they are in an active role rather than the passive role. The student is actively making choices about how to generate, obtain, manipulate,or display information. Technology use allows many more students to be actively thinking about information, making choices, and executing skills. I can do lessons such as career software program that includes an interest survey & teaches students about career clusters and it is part of the development of a graduation planner for both high school course work & for post-secondary planning, PowerPoint after teaching a series of lessons in order to reinforce the skills I have taught. A great unit lesson:"Diversity" illustrating the multicultural celebration of winter holidays. Students can make a calendar project which links to other around the world who shared their celebration of Christmas, Hanukkah, & other holidays. I would design multimedia videos/presentations re: substance abuse prevention, peer, organization, and more.

Technology is the ultimate carrot for students.

It's something they want to master. Learning to use it enhances their self-esteem and makes them excited about coming to school. The computer has been an empowering tool to the students. They have a voice and it's not in any way secondary to anybody else's voice. It's an equal voice. Having a computer available to them in their classroom would be incredibly positive.
