Guiding Students to Love Reading

My students need 6 copies of 20 book titles from, "Frog and Toad are Friends" to "Ruby Bridges," to meet their varied learning levels.

A love of reading will be my students' ticket to meeting their unbelievable potential. I teach a self-contained third grade class at an arts-infused charter school in a low-income area of Indiana.

A majority of my students have spent their academic careers behind their peers who are growing up in more affluent areas. Because of this, many of them find reading frustrating, something that presents a constant struggle. Students are constantly telling me how much they hate reading, how hard it is and how boring.

I want my students to love reading and to realize the joy that comes with becoming an avid reader. In order to do this, I need a leveled library for my classroom so that I can guide my students in reading at their individual levels. When they are struggling through our basil reader, the joy of reading is lost on many of them. They need rich stories they can engage with and truly comprehend. To meet this end, I am requesting six copies of 20 titles. The books included are nonfiction, high-interest books such as, "The Story of Ruby Bridges" and "Great Black Heroes." Also included are fiction classics, such as "Frog and Toad are Friends," "The Boxcar Children," and "Encyclopedia Brown." The opportunity to experience engaging books at their levels will foster a sense of success and enjoyment.

To be truly successful in life, my students need to learn to become true readers. You can help them do that by sponsoring this proposal. With your help, my students will be able to succeed at their level. They will become true lovers of literature, and in turn, successful learners.
