My Students

My first grade students attend an inner city, low income school in Indiana where 90% of our students are on the free/reduced lunch program.

My students are loving, kind, intelligent, inquisitive, and unique. They come to school every day ready to learn, and in our community, that is very rare. Many of them are home alone in the evening while their parents are working 2-3 jobs to make the ends meet.

My Project

Listening to someone read is one of the best ways to inspire children to continue reading on their own and to choose to read in their free time. I have several struggling readers in my class who are 2 grades below where they should be and they have been held back in a year, maybe two. They are living in such poverty that they hoard crackers from breakfast so will have something to eat before they go to bed.

Living vicariously through characters in books may be the only way these kids get to see what else is outside the walls of their community.

Who knows, maybe they will read about a character that inspires them to make a difference in this world.
