Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Energized by a classroom of students, friends, and learners, my room is constantly buzzing with questions, with insight, and with excitement. From backgrounds spanning across the county, the state, the country, and the world, my students collectively speak words, phrases, and sentences of eleven different dialects, though their languages all speak to the same rhyme and reason: they're so ready for this world.
These students are extremely eager, enthusiastic, and hungry for access to new ideas and new experiences.
They're ready for learning opportunities, ready for inquiry-based research, and they're ready to be in tune and in touch with the world around them. In a classroom limited to the resources within four cinder block walls, hanging posters, and a whiteboard, these kiddos need opportunities to think beyond the teeny-tiny perimeter of first grade. School is our safety, our home, and our community - new resources help my little learners to see new aspirations and dreams that will refine our new world!
My Project
Individualized, differentiated instruction is IMPERATIVE for student success in their early, primary years of learning. However, being out of school makes these 1:1 opportunities few and far between. A typical school day allows for small-group meetings to share, read, and decode appropriate, instructional reading resources. While away from the classroom, getting developmentally appropriate books into the hands of little learners is not as feasible, or even possible! This online tool will provide PDF versions of leveled, teaching books for my kids to use at home. In our virtual cohorts, we'll all have copies of instructional texts to share connections, characters, word study topics, and more! Unlike picture books at the library or eBooks online, these books are written and designed to facilitate teaching opportunities and book talk - crucial to the success and literacy exposure of my students.
