Students loved learning about the mindfulness practice of \"Taking 5\" to slow down and focus their minds to what is happening around them. Each week students participated in a counseling session where they practice each of the 5 steps. During our first session, students were asked to think of a situation where they might have a big feeling, such as frustration or sadness. Students were instructed to think of that situation the whole time we played a game. Students were then told they would be going on a duck hunt of finding 25 rubber ducks hidden in my office. At the end of the game, students were asked how they felt and they shared that they felt happy or excited- comfortable feelings. We talked through what happened to the feelings of sadness or frustration and students shared that when they were given a job of thinking of something else the feelings went away. Students added to their tool kits an \"I spy of coping strategies\" document but were also reminded that when having big feelings sometimes looking around at the objects in a space can help to relax the feelings. Week 2 the students were taught how to do a body scan of checking in to see how their bodies might be feeling. Students also got to choose fidgets to put into their boxes. Week 3 we talked about how sounds are all around us. Week 4 was things they can be smelled either good smells or bad smells and students created sniff bags of essential oils that smell good to them on cotton balls in a Ziplock bag to add to their tool kit. Our last week together was an opportunity for students to practice how mindfulness is about slowing down in the moment, but students tasty Jelly Belly jelly beans where they had to eat them one at a time and think about what flavor the jelly bean might be.","fullyFundedDate":1736955023501,"projectUrl":"project/building-calm-crusaders/9041379/","projectTitle":"Building Calm Crusaders","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Crummett","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp148576_orig.jpg?crop=716,716,x294,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1665426638439","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/sara-crummett"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_33733","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":814,"numTeachers":55,"percentFrplEligible":64,"percentAsian":4,"percentBlack":4,"percentWhite":16,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":72,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 2","studentTeacherRatio":"14.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":59.5,"schoolId":33733,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Bailey's Elementary School Arts & Science on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Bailey's Elementary School Arts & Science","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/virginia/fairfax-county-public-schools/bailey-s-elementary-school/33733"}
