My Students

Have you ever seen a child struggle trying to read a book? My heart would break when I would see a kid give up on reading just because he or she lacked the tools needed to succeed. What better way to help a child read than to provide the reading tools he or she needs to practice reading.

The students that I teach come from families that cannot always provide books at home.

Their families do what they can to simply survive and make ends meet. In many cases these students have never held a book in their hand until they have entered Kindergarten. When the students reach me in First Grade they are behind in the basic reading skills they need to succeed in reading.

My Project

My students need books Levels A through D, Fiction and Nonfiction, on their individual reading level to practice both at school and at home to become better readers. I firmly believe that students who have access to books become better readers as well as lifelong learners. The books that I have requested are leveled readers that I will use during the students' guided reading time. The students will practice reading skills with me during the day, and take the book home at night to practice with his or her family. The student will return the book the following day and select a new book to take home.

Thanks to you the students who entered my classroom this year as struggling readers will exit my class as confident readers ready to attack the second grade with a thirst for reading and become lifelong learners!
