My students need a table to engage in meaningful, targeted guided reading instruction!!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Reading has never been an enjoyable activity for my students. All of my students are between 7 and 10 years behind grade level!! They need a comfortable, interactive space (i.e., activity table) to engage in meaningful reading instruction targeted to their individual needs.
My students are enthusiastic and eager to learn, yet highly hesitant.
They attend a Title I, public high school in a neighborhood characterized by high levels of poverty and violence. Despite their seemingly endless commute to school, they come early to class ready to learn. Coupled with their enduring reality is a differing ability label which places them as targets in the school, both inside and outside the classroom. My classroom is a space where they feel safe to take learning risks.
As my mission is to build a physically, mentally, and emotionally safe classroom, I am requesting a piece of furniture that can help foster such a culture. This semester I have begun intensive guided reading groups fit with color-coded folders and engaging reading activities. However, what I lack is an interactive space conducive to the needs of this instructional strategy. As shown in the photograph, the rickety, decade-old desks my students occupy do not provide the necessary space to fully delve into the reading lesson and materials. Many times instructional time is lost because a book or a vocabulary card falls on the ground as I attempt to interact with four different, wobbly desks. In order to guide my students toward increased reading ability AND enjoyment, I need the physical space to do so.
Please help me purchase a stable table to enable my students to be able to understand that their label will not hold them back from gaining meaning from a good fable!
Let's guide the next generation's sense of reading for meaning.
