Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In first grade our goal is to read, read, read. I tell my students that the most important things you will learn in life is to read and write. At the end of the day we chant, "When I say 'R', you say 'ead'. R-ead. R-ead. Read, read, read!"

My students are energetic, curious 6- and 7-year-olds who come from all walks of life.

Many face challenges at home and school is a safe, consistent place where they can learn and grow. We have a high English language learner population and many students come from low-income families. Despite these difficulties, students are loving, caring, and try their hardest to learn and become more knowledgeable. I love spending time with my class each day - no matter if it's a 'smooth' day or overflowing with challenges.

My Project

These book sets will provide interesting reading material for students at their particular reading level. Students love reading about many different things and when books are just right for them, they are building reading skills and learning new information all at the same time. We use book sets for small group guided reading instruction. These help students build word recognition skills as well as building confidence because they are able to read books independently. Students are able to take books home to continue to practice reading, but they often get lost and our book sets are incomplete. Having new sets plus a timer will help to ensure that students have the resources they need to learn and grow.
