Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students may come from meager means, humble homes and fractured families but they come eager and excited to learn. My Title I school houses students K-5 and provides each and every one with not only breakfast and lunch but a classroom that serves as a home.

They are not just my students but my family, and each year I am lucky enough to begin a school year with new members.

While my family continues to grow, their needs continue to be met with proper support and dedication.

My Project

Reading has been and will continue to be at the forefront of my teaching focus. With an emphasis on strategies and skills, my students continue to become fluent, comprehensive readers.

In an effort to provide my students with reading support, book sets are a necessity during small group instruction.

Each day I meet with small groups of students to address the varying needs of each group (readers have been assessed to determine appropriate group placement). During this time, I use books that are leveled to fit the expectations of said group. Because each group includes a different skill set, multiple leveled books are needed.

With a focus on specific reading skills, these book sets will aid to better instruction and understanding, allowing my students to show growth towards grade level expectations.
