The students of our school community are filled with children from a neighborhood that is rich with cultural institutions, parks, historic landmarks, family run businesses and community based organizations. It is filled with children from multiple diverse backgrounds, children of all different levels and needs and filled with loving and encouraging educators. YCS is a collaborative community of active thinkers who are preparing leaders of the 21st century. We pride ourselves in the relationships that we have been developing with the neighborhood organizations and community businesses in order to meet the needs of our students. The students of YCS engage in meaningful connections that these amazing neighborhood sites provide within and outside the classroom. The students of YCS follow 4 core values on a day to day basis: Honesty, Responsibility, Respect and Kindness.
"Never do anything by halves if you want to get away with it.
Be outrageous. Go the whole hog. Make sure everything you do is so completely crazy, it's unbelievable...”

My Project
These guided reading books will help my students develop as individual readers while teachers are available for support and scaffolding. Students learn skills and strategies that will allow them to read difficult texts independently. Students experience success in reading for meaning.
These books will allow me to provide differentiated teaching that supports students in developing reading proficiency.
For the student, the guided reading lesson means reading and talking (and sometimes writing) about an interesting and engaging variety of fiction and nonfiction texts. For the teacher, guided reading means taking the opportunity for careful text selection and intentional and intensive teaching of systems of strategic activity for proficient reading (Fountas & Pinnell, 1996).
After assessment, students are grouped for efficient reading instruction. While individuals always vary, the students in the group are alike enough that they can be effectively taught in a group. In order to teach these groups effectively, we need a variety of books (and a few copies of each).
Having both nonfiction and fiction texts allow the teacher to select a book that students will be able to process successfully with instruction.
