My students need 10 sets of leveled books so that they can partner read together every day and discuss the books together.

This project is fully funded

I am a 2nd grade teacher teaching at a Title 1 school in DC. My students come in to school every day after not having had someone at home to support them as most people are used to. They might not have had a good meal, a hug, or electricity. They might have seen something horrible happen, with no understanding why.

My students also lack the print at home that most students need in 2nd grade. They also do not understand how to communicate together about literature and texts in a social setting. Research shows that when students can talk about the text together in a partner reading, they can gain a true understanding of the events in the text. However, we do not have multiple copies of books so that the students can read the same book at the same time.

This project will greatly benefit my students because with the multiple copies of the same book, they can together read and refer back to the same pages without having to lean around each other and look at the same small book. This will also allow the students to go back to their own seats and read the book independently, before they meet and discuss the book.

Your donation will make it possible to allow my students to engage in conversations about the texts that they are reading beyond the comprehension that they think about in their reading lessons. This gives them a chance to truly talk about the characters feelings, their feelings, and the connections. It is impossible to partner read without multiple copies of books, and only your donation can help our 2nd graders achieve this!
