GSA Rainbow Library

Help me give my students and other LGBTQ students in our school a rainbow library where they can find books that they can identify with and that represent who they are.

My Students

This year I have had the privilege of becoming the faculty advisor for our Gender and Sexuality Alliance club. This is the first year of the club and we are so excited to be able to offer this safe and supportive space to our LGBTQ students and allies.

My GSA members are such an awesome bunch of students.

They are excited about who they are and what they can do to make a more inclusive experience for themselves and all LGBTQ students to come.

Their excitement is contagious and I can't wait to all the great things they can do!

My Project

LGBTQ students often feel that books with LGBTQ characters and themes are underrepresented in their school libraries. Our Gender Sexuality Alliance has made it their goal to build a GSA Rainbow Library that will be available to all students at our middle school. The library will be managed by the GSA and will allow students to discretely borrow LGBTQ affirming books for independent reading and school projects without a formal library record being kept. We hope this will make students that are questioning feel more comfortable with finding books that represent who they are.

I feel strongly that books representing my LGBTQ students will not only benefit them but all students at our middle school.

These books will help to inform and educate heterosexual students while also allowing LGBTQ students to see themselves reflected in the stories they read which will provide a sense of community and inclusion that is crucial to students this age.
