LGBTQ students often feel that books with LGBTQ characters and themes are underrepresented in their school libraries. Our Gender Sexuality Alliance has made it their goal to build a GSA Rainbow Library that will be available to all students at our middle school. The library will be managed by the GSA and will allow students to discretely borrow LGBTQ affirming books for independent reading and school projects without a formal library record being kept. We hope this will make students that are questioning feel more comfortable with finding books that represent who they are. I feel strongly that books representing my LGBTQ students will not only benefit them but all students at our middle school. These books will help to inform and educate heterosexual students while also allowing LGBTQ students to see themselves reflected in the stories they read which will provide a sense of community and inclusion that is crucial to students this age.
