My Students

My classroom is home to as many as 36 5th graders. Many of the students have been at our school for their entire school experience. We are a close-knit community and a small school. We work hard to provide not only the best instructional experience but also an environment that is current and fresh for students.

Our students' dedication and performance are a direct reflection of our school environment, community, and family support.

Students come to school eager to engage in a variety of STEAM based lessons and are excited to learn about real life applications to the topics they're learning about in school.

I strive to provide learning experiences that will inspire and resonate with my students for years to come. This means hands-on learning which is frequently non-traditional. I weave in art and games to help gain and keep their interest. It's a challenge, but the outcome is beyond rewarding. Students are able to let their creativity shine and discover what topics they're passionate about.

My Project

School bell schedules are generally built around staffing rather than what we as educators know to be the best structure. There are often long gaps between the start of school and breaks, and for older kids lunch seems like light years away.

Having a variety of nutritious (semi) snacks for all students will help quiet grumbly bellies so that students can easily sustain focus through lunch.

Although a few of my students bring their own snacks, the majority rely on school for lunches. Those students have 4.5 hours between arrival and lunch time which means closer to 6 hours since eating breakfast. Having peanut-free snacks such as granola bars, goldfish, and popcorn readily available for their recess time will help these students focus on learning rather than the clock until lunch.
