This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have a class of Kindergarten students who come from a high poverty environment. All of our students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. We are located in a large city in an area that has low-income properties and housing. We provide weekend meals to our children along with a Farmer's Market food pantry that is offered monthly to our families.
Our school has the highest immigrant population in our district.
We have many students in our population who speak English as a second language and have very little opportunities for real-life experiences at home. My Kindergarten students have come to my class with little exposure to academics and life experiences.
My Project
I am requesting snacks for my boys and girls in my class. Sometimes when working we need a little pick me up, other times we earn snacks for rewards, and other times we are hungry and need something to hold us over until lunch/dinner.
My class comes from a high poverty area and often times are hungry and needing something.
I also tutor boys and girls after school and the snacks will be used for a tutoring snack as well in addition to a take home food supply! Students need fully bellies to be able to learn and focus. Hunger should never be a reason a child is struggling, so I like to have snacks on hand when needed to support my learners!
