Ms. Duggins from Anchorage AK is requesting professional development through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
I need help with lodging so I can attend this leadership summit in an effort to impact and better serve more students than just those I teach.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am currently fortunate enough to teach a beautiful group of culturally diverse children ranging from second grade to fifth grade in the beautiful state of Alaska. My children are learning how to celebrate their successes (even the small ones) and use their struggles as learning tools to lead them to more successes. As a special education teacher, I see my children go through struggles that their general education peers do not experience. But it touches my heart to see them trying their hardest every day to overcome those struggles.
Every day is a surprise.
I never know what my children are going to show me or do from day to day, but I enjoy finding out. There is nothing greater than being greeted with a hug and a smile from them and hearing them tell other people what a great teacher I am. I love what I do and what I have been doing for the last 18 years. I am always seeking ways that I can better myself for the sake of my kids. Attending professional development sessions help me to serve my kids, my parents, my school, and my entire educational community more effectively.
By attending sessions like "Organize! Activate! Let's Protect Public Education in 2020!" and "Talking Race: Grounding Our Understanding to Effectively Talk About Race and Racial Justice" I will acquire tools to protect my students' educational rights and prepare them for the world outside of our school walls. We are living in very turbulent, scary times, especially for our minority children. Unfortunately, most children in Special Education programs do not have the parental support or home lives that will prepare them for the real world.
Teachers don't just teach.
We parent, mentor, counsel, and love. Attending this conference makes me better.
