My Students
I teach at a magnet school for gifted and high-achieving students. We serve students in grades 6-12 from throughout our district. Students test for admission, and most students are functioning above the 90th percentile. All students are working at least one grade level above their actual age. The students in my school are a true melting pot of nationalities, religions, and economic levels, but the common trait that they have is the love of being challenged and learning new things. My students challenge each other, and me, to learn more and do their very best, both in and out of the classroom!
My Project
This school year has been a constant stream of challenges. A delayed start date as our district waited for technology deliveries and several hurricanes in our area which forced school closings have created the need to add 30 minutes to each school day through March to ensure that we get instructional minutes. The way this works for my students is that they now have lunch as late as 1:30. This is a long time to focus and be productive. In addition to the longer days, my students are either hybrid (meaning they come in 2-3 days a week) or 100% virtual (where they learn from home daily. These groups of students are taught simultaneously - and I have found that by having them all login to Google Meet, all of my learners are able to collaborate and feel a part of the class, which is so important for their emotional and social health.
Having healthy snacks will allow my students to better focus during the 5 1/2 hours of classes before lunch, while the headphones with microphones will allow my in-person learners the opportunities to collaborate with peers who are working from home.
This year, more than ever, without meeting my students' social and emotional needs first, I will be unable to challenge them academically. Food and headphones will allow me to do this. Finally, I would like to have a supply of feminine products to keep on hand in all of the girls' restrooms to help our girls avoid the embarrassment of needing to ask for them when they need them. This small gesture will also go a long way in the emotional well-being of our young ladies.
