My Project

My students are naturally curious and eager to understand how the world works, especially when they can explore it for themselves. They ask thoughtful questions and are most engaged when they can move beyond textbooks and actually investigate scientific ideas in a hands-on way. Many of them have had limited access to real lab experiences, so opportunities to experiment, observe, and analyze are especially meaningful.

This project will give my students access to real lab tools so they can investigate how water quality and light affects plant growth and observe those changes at a microscopic level.

The hydroponic growing system will serve as a controlled environment where students can explore how variables like water quality affect plant growth. Instead of simply learning about these concepts, they will be able to test ideas, observe changes over time, and collect real data.

The microscopes will allow students to take their learning a step further by examining plant structures and cells up close. With the prepared slides, students will first learn how to properly use the microscopes and identify key structures. They will then create their own slides using samples from the plants they grow. This will help them connect what they see at the visible level to what is happening at the microscopic level.

The seeds will provide a range of plant types that allow for comparison and repeated trials. This will support student-led investigations into growth patterns and environmental effects.

Together, these resources will transform science from something students read about into something they actively experience. My goal is for students to think like scientists by asking questions, testing ideas, and making observations that deepen their understanding of the natural world.
