My Students

We are a Title 1 school where all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Our community is struggling with many resources. We are a mining community where many of our families are working shift work. Not many have the time to sit and play games and interact as a family.

We also have many students dealing with trauma in their lives.

Some have never experienced calm. It is not the child's fault, but it is what we have to deal with and what they have to struggle with as we attempt to educate them.

My Project

The games will be used to teach social skills. Many lessons are learned by taking turns and being a good sport. We have many students who have never played a game with their family and struggle with taking turns. It is also a good way to teach following directions. I will use it in group counseling as well as a game club.

The Julia Cook books are all about different social and emotional learning concepts, from personal space to digital footprints to rumors and gossip.

I have used a few of her books and they are phenomenal in teaching these concepts.
