My students need multiple books for a library to build their love of reading, having recently emerged from the beginning reading stage and entering the independent and engaged stage.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Watching a student, especially one that has struggled with reading, fall in love with a character or series is the best feeling. My classroom serves students in grades 1-4 for whom reading does not come easily, and I vow to never let that difficulty impede their ability to fall in love with reading.
My students are 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders eligible for specialized instruction in reading due to a documented history of reading difficulty or disability.
They are all lovers of books, from the student who identifies with Romona Quimby to the student who can't get enough information about the solar system. Many of my students have a difficult time feeling successful at school, and I aim every day to ensure they recognize and value hard work, small steps toward success, and the freedoms and pleasures of reading. Our school is located in Washington D.C. and 89% of my students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.
My Project
My classroom follows a Readers Workshop model, where students are empowered to select their own on-level books to practice the skill of the day. An essential component of Readers Workshop is that students choose high-interest, engaging titles that allow them to practice a variety of skills: word-solving, inferring, tracking character change, and so on. A wide variety of high-interest books is a must. Students would use these books every day for Readers Workshop, ideally using the same chapter book for homework and as a text for their writing work.
These donations will drastically increase the number of books available to children and open their horizons to new authors, series, and concepts.
Most importantly, each book has the potential to be "that book" that makes a student fall in love with reading.
