They have been using them during small group reading and literacy centers to practice putting words together to form complete sentences. The puzzles help them focus on sentence structure, capitalization, and punctuation in a hands-on and engaging way. What I love most is how confident they feel when they successfully build a sentence—they can physically see and touch each part of the sentence, which makes the skill more concrete. For my struggling readers, these puzzles are a fun way to practice sight words, while my advanced readers use them to expand and create more complex sentences.\r\n\r\nThey are so excited to use the Magnetic Foam Base Ten Set during our math lessons! They are using the pieces on the whiteboard to build numbers, practice place value, and solve addition and subtraction problems. The hands-on, magnetic pieces make it easy for them to move numbers around, visualize regrouping, and see how tens and ones come together to form larger numbers. During small groups, students take turns building numbers with the base ten blocks and explaining their thinking to classmates. This has helped strengthen their number sense and boosted their confidence with math. The set has truly made abstract math concepts more concrete and interactive.\r\n\r\nI want to sincerely thank you for funding my project, Hands-On Learning: The Power of Sensory and Manipulative Tools. Your generosity ensures that my students will have access to sensory and manipulative materials that support focus, build fine motor skills, and make abstract concepts more concrete. For many of my learners, these resources are not just extras – they are essential tools that help them succeed academically and socially. Thanks to you, my classroom will be a more inclusive and engaging place where students can thrive through hands-on exploration. We appreciate you for believing in our mission and investing in our future!\"","fullyFundedDate":1758811814356,"projectUrl":"project/hands-on-learning-the-power-of-sensory/9522883/","projectTitle":"Hands-On Learning: the Power of Sensory and Manipulative Tools","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Washington","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10104964"},{"teacherId":2604595,"projectId":9203881,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donations, which have truly transformed the mental health practitioner's office into a welcoming and therapeutic space for out students. Because of your support, student have a comfortable environment where they can freely express and explore their emotions. When students first saw the donated items, they were visibly moved by the variety of options available to help them manage their feelings during heightened emotional moments. The kinetic sand, in particular, has brought immense joy-watching their face light up as the sand runs through their fingers is a powerful reminder of the impact these tools have on their well-being. \r\n\r\nThe sensory toys have sparked excitement and engagement, while the workbooks have supported meaningful learning and emotional growth. Your support brought vital resources into our GALLY Resource Room for a group of seven incredible boys—all of whom are navigating unique learning needs alongside behavioral and social-emotional challenges. These students are full of energy, personality, and potential, and your contributions have helped us unlock even more of that.\r\n\r\nThe day the materials arrived, my students' faces lit up. From tactile fidget tools to class store incentives, each item sparked curiosity and engagement. One student, who usually needs extra prompting to stay focused, immediately sat down with a weighted lap pad and said, \"This helps me think better.\" We began using these tools during our SEL check-ins and independent learning blocks, and the impact was immediate—students were more regulated, willing to collaborate, and invested in their goals. We even created a classroom economy where students could earn tokens for showing empathy, emotional control, or completing a task independently—something that had previously been a struggle.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue building on these gains by integrating these tools into our new behavioral intervention plans and project-based learning. Inspired by Michelle Obama's conversation with President Obama and Craig Robinson about raising emotionally intelligent boys, we are leaning into conversations about emotions, identity, and community. These boys, many of whom come from under-resourced backgrounds, are not only learning math and literacy—they're learning to see themselves as valued, emotionally capable young men. That transformation would not have been possible without your help.\r\n\r\nThank you for believing in our classroom and in their future.","fullyFundedDate":1742920872822,"projectUrl":"project/bison-class-store/8990378/","projectTitle":"Bison Class Store","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. mcCoy","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9864085"},{"teacherId":8500757,"projectId":8624545,"letterContent":"Thank you so much I am able to provide extra seating and provide small group instruction.\r\nOn top of they are nice and colorful very eye catching when you walk into my classroom. \r\n\r\nWhen teachers walk in they compliment my stools.\r\nThe bands added a wonderful touch to my room. I ended up using all of them for my students so I one felt left out. The bands supported my students who had a lot of energy. They were able to focus during whole group lesson and complete independent work all by themselves. When they felt the need to love I could see their legs bouncing. This eliminated walking around the room, getting out of their seats, and distracting others.","fullyFundedDate":1726685492218,"projectUrl":"project/classroom-essentials/8624545/","projectTitle":"Classroom Essentials","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Lane","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8500757_orig.png?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1692133032518","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8500757"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_102493","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":458,"numTeachers":33,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":98,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":0,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"1 - 4","studentTeacherRatio":"13.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":25.4,"schoolId":102493,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about KIPP District of Columbia - Heights Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"KIPP District of Columbia - Heights Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/district-of-columbia/kipp-dc-public-schools/kipp-dc-heights-academy/102493"}
