Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students enter ninth grade, at times, hating to read--for assorted reasons. Thus, it's my job to plant the seed of literacy. I plant the seed by supplying my students with modern and high interest novels that are companion novels for the traditional cannon. For example, while reading The Odyssey as a class, students select from over 15 modern myth-based novels to read in conjunction, such Lore, Daughter of Sparta, and A Song of Wraiths and Ruin.
Help me continue to water and fertilize my students' love of reading.
My students are currently reading companion novels for Romeo and Juliet like Once Upon a Marigold by Jean Ferris and All My Rage by Sabaa Tahir. And in Art/ELA, my students are reading a graphic novel by Montague called Maybe An Artist.
As we hurtle toward the end-of-the-year, students have begun approaching me about checking out novels over summer break--seriously, my heart is bursting with joy! Students requesting novels, amazing! A few students have even requested specific titles. So, I am hoping you can help me provide these novels for my students.
