This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My class is called directed studies, which means that I have the same students for four class periods a day. I teach them English, math, science, and social studies. These students are high functioning, but have specific learning problems in reading, reading comprehension, writing, math, or all of these areas. The school is located in a more rural area of our major city. These students do not have access to or knowledge of how food is grown and how it gets to the grocery store.
It is my job to ensure that these students have the best education possible while they are with me, and I want to make their time with me enjoyable and rewarding.
I want to teach a unit on plants and environmental science by having them raise plants from seeds to full grown plants, which we will put in the planters at our school. To do this we need equipment, soil, and seeds to accomplish our mission, and to make it successful.
My Project
These materials will allow my students to plant seeds, watch them grow, cultivate the soil in the planters, then plant the new plants into the planters to watch them grow over the year. In my area, my students are not exposed to growing plants or taking care of things. This will give them the opportunity to take care of plants and then be able to watch them grow. It will also allow the other students at my school to see what my students can do. The students will also be able to pick the vegetables to take home to each and the flowers to their parents. It will make the entrance to our school more inviting and make use of the planters that are full of weeds right now.
