Growing Gardeners

Help me give my students gardening tools and supplies for a one of a kind experience to give back to the community!

Ms. Ausse Frank Elementary School
Kenosha, WI Grades PreK-2

My Students

My students are young, vibrant little kiddos who are so excited to be at school! I teach preschool students ranging from ages 3-5 years old at a diverse, high poverty elementary school. For most of them, this is their first experience in a structured school setting. Research shows that children learn best through PLAY - my students love to explore, create, and learn every day. So, we have to be quick on our feet and always adapting to meet the needs of our active learners. I want my students to walk out of school every day with knowledge in their brains and joy in their hearts!

My Project

Every year, the students at my school have two learning expeditions that center around social issues, science experiments, and a service project. After our 8-12 week deep dive into our grade level topics, whether that be learning how food gets from a farm to our grocery stores, investigating invasive species affecting our wildlife, or saving the bees, we finish with a school-wide celebration, and a service learning project - our students provide a service or create something to give back to our community.

With our gardening expedition, we will be teaching our pre-school students the parts of a plant, what plants need to grow, and how to garden successfully - our final product will be growing a variety of vegetables to distribute to families in our community.

This is a unique and extremely rewarding experience for our young kiddos; creating something with their own hands and sharing it with those who need it! We will also create a small garden in our outdoor classroom.

We will use the garden tools, flower game, and bug collection for our hands on centers for independent exploration. We will use the butterflies to discuss who needs plants to live (humans, animals, insects). The best part - the soil, seeds, and pots - will be used to plant our veggie collection to distribute! I can't wait for my little gardeners to make their mark on our community!
