My students need a classroom set of Harry Potter. I spend the first 15 minutes every day reading out loud, hoping to foster avid readers in the future!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 5th grade science and reading language arts at an elementary school in Dallas. The population I serve is 95% or more Latin@ and economically disadvantaged. I teach both bilingual and monolingual students (Spanish/English), and they are the most amazing, hard-working students.
Although faced with so many challenges outside of our campus grounds, my students are resilient and hungry for relevant and responsive teaching.
Our school is sought after in the community because of the incredible administration and positive culture fostered by the teachers. We hope to continue growing in excellence!
My Project
Public school education is, sadly, often focused on teaching to a test. I would like to change that narrative by reading authentically with my students every day for 15 minutes. I noticed that many of my students, even the "good readers," did not escape into an imaginary world like I once did as a young reader. Harry Potter was a huge part of my childhood, and it taught me so much about friendship, love, and morality.
We began reading Holes in March, and about half the class came up to me individually to let me know how much they enjoyed this new activity.
It was the best feeling in the world to know that they enjoyed reading with me. I had 27 students engaged in the reading, even my friends who enjoy being the class clown! I would love to end the year by reading the first Harry Potter as a class, culminating in a movie night to compare the book and movie.
My ultimate educational goal is to show my students that reading can be fun. Reading has always been a way for me to escape reality, and I want to share that experience with my students. My hope is that by reading just to read will help my students learn to love reading.
