Growing and Harvesting Our Own Urban Produce (While in Recovery)

My Project

Oftentimes students don't see the entire pathway of food from farm to plate. This investment will help my students make connections to where their food comes from, and how easy the technology of hydroponics makes growing and harvesting food in the desert. Students will research and select seeds of their choice, which they will germinate, observe, and document daily. Students will be able to grow and transplant seedlings from our indoor garden into our school's brand new serenity garden. Students can grow flowers for special events at home (or at school), cultivate salad greens to take home or donate for our annual Founder's Dinner, or even grow and dry their own herbs to use at home. In an urban setting, most of my students haven't had exposure to gardening. With this gift, my students will be able to watch the entire life cycle of plants happen within the walls of our classroom, which they can easily connect to many of the standards we cover in class, such as the process of photosynthesis, the cycling of nutrients, and plant genetics and reproduction.

My students are all attending our unique high school because they are in recovery for drug and/or alcohol addiction.

They are resilient, and have a wide range of range of cognitive abilities. In addition to food, plants create a calming environment wherever they are grown. This gift would be a perfect addition to our classroom and greatly enhance the Principles of Botany elective course we are offering this year.
