Growing a Garden - Part 2

My students need utility carts to move compost and mulch where it is needed, hula-ho cultivators to keep weeds down in the garden, and a variety of seeds to start in our greenhouse.

My Students

Our school is located in an area that has a long agricultural history, and yet most of the students are disconnected from the source of their food. They have little knowledge of what it takes to grow and harvest nutritious food. Even so, my students have displayed a passion for working outdoors and enormous enthusiasm for growing edible plants.

My students want to implement a school garden that will benefit all students on our campus by increasing their access to fresh produce.

The garden will be a place where students can learn how to plant and harvest their favorite fruits and vegetables and get a much needed outdoor break during the day!

My Project

The garden will serve students in 6th through 8th grade. Students will use the utility trailers to carry compost and mulch to the garden site. The potting mix will be an ideal growing medium for our seeds and will be used in the greenhouse to fill our seed trays. Students will use the hula-ho cultivators to remove weeds from around the plants after they are transplanted outside. The pruning shears will help to clear the planting area of unwanted growth and will allow us to prune the fruit trees. Each of these tools will be instrumental to the success of our garden.

Learning to use these tools will help students gain confidence in their ability to grow and produce their own food.

Nutritious and healthy foods can be incredibly delicious, especially when they are grown with your own hands! This school garden project will foster an appreciation of fresh produce through student involvement and ownership. Produce from the garden will be used to benefit students on our campus.
